Halloween Eve in ModCloth

I made my first ModCloth purchase which is a cute cotton dress celebrating Edgar Allan Poe; perfect for Halloween time.  My one complaint is that for a $90 dress, it should have been lined.  I became hooked on the cute crow/raven prints and the nod to the mysterious writer, so I gave this a try.  Hopefully my next purchase from them will have the quality of Anthropologie, like a nice lining under the garments.  Even a cheap one is better than nothing.

Pairing a Halloween Shirt with Anthropologie

Since I love Halloween, I have a few festive shirts for the occasion.  The trick to not falling into the dreaded dorky, holiday shirt problem is in the pairing and the picture.  This long sleeved tee shirt from Kmart that I bought about four years ago has the traditional witch and black cat looking subtle, not goofy.  I then finished the outfit off by pairing a pumpkin colored  Anthropologie cardigan from last year.
The last two pictures show the charm of this traditional fisherman style sweater.  One of the trademark styles of Anthropologie that I love, is when they take a classic style and add a charming touch.  This cardigan is longer in the back which is perfect for low rise jeans and the bottom is finished off with a pretty ribbon detail.

Bringing Out the Vintage

One of the nice things about Halloween is that you have a good excuse to bring out the vintage.  While running last minute Halloween errands this weekend, I decided to pair this old Anthropologie sweater with a vintage skirt.  I purchased this skirt at the Flea Market for $5 about twelve years ago.  The material is very stiff and it's lined in a thick tulle, so it's not prone to wrinkling.  The sweater came with the pin and pearl accent and was offered in this pink, black and I think the other color was a light green.  I'm not sure what the brand is; Monogram perhaps?
I bought these leather ballet flats by Kenneth Cole this weekend for $25 at Costco.

Sweater: Old Anthropologie
Skirt: Vintage 50's
Shoes: Kenneth Cole Luka Ballet Flats from Costco.

She Sells Sea Shells

It's disconcerting when the pictures in the mirror seem better than they appear.  This is how I felt after seeing the pictures of me in this outfit.  It looked fine in the mirror so what happened?  This skirt is so fun but the length is quite long and may need a heel instead of flats.  I also think it may be pretty to wear a cream colored top to bring out the sailboats.

Top:  Old Costco. Costco? Yes Costco.  Patricia Jones Collection from Costco.
Skirt: Anthropologie Leifnotes Sailaway Circle Skirt
Necklace:  Target from about 3 or 4 years ago

Frog and the Mushroom

It's always a special treat when you discover an outfit combination that really clicks.  When Anthropologie recently offered free shipping, I decided to add the Toadstool Blouse to my collection and when I received it in the mail, my buyers remorse was put at ease.  It is a gorgeous silk blouse with little sequins adorning some of the mushrooms and a pretty color palette that can go with many different shades.
I originally planned on wearing this with a green pencil skirt until I pulled out my Crimson Maple colored skirt from last year's J.Crew collection and saw how perfectly the mushrooms matched.  Then came the frog ring when I spotted the little guy amongst my costume jewelry.   Although poppies may have been more spot on, the mushrooms felt very suitable for seeing the musical Wizard of Oz at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco.

Preppy Yorkie Polo

Yesterday I pulled out an old Ralph Lauren polo shirt from, I think as old as the late 90's.  When I spotted the shirt at Saks Fifth Avenue that many years ago, I was attracted to the unique logo of the dog, which was a nice change from the typical polo player.
So I thought it was a funny coincidence when I flipped through my October Bazaar magazine today and came upon a cute article about Ralph Lauren and his involvement with the Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month.
This shirt is a nice fit so it would be nice if they reproduced these with cute dogs and or cats.

Lopsided Photo and Pumpkin Fun

I obviously went pumpkin crazy at Trader Joe's this weekend and I am pleased to report that the Pumpkin Bar Mix is incredible!  I have yet to try the ravioli and crackers, but I do remember the Pumpkin Butter and Pecan Pumpkin Oatmeal from last year and they are outstanding as well.
I bought this Odille skirt two years ago in a consignment shop and although I usually wear a pink tee with it, I think bringing out the autumnal colors works nicely also.

Skirt: Anthropologie Odille thrifted
Necklace: Anthropologie

Anthropologie Cardigan Find

I found this Sleeping on Snow Femme Fisherman cardigan at one of my local consignment shops for $26.  At first I thought that the price seemed high for a worn cardigan with piling, until I saw them on Ebay for a lot more.  The big collar seemed silly and awkward at first, but after trying it on and buttoning the middle, I fell hard for it.  I look forward to wearing this when the weather gets colder.

All Day Shoes

Lately it seems that the only shoes I am wearing these days are my Payless American Eagle Flats.  I have coined a term called the two hour shoes and the "Three Hour Tour" part of the Gilligan's Island theme plays in my head every time I think of this.  The shoes that I can wear all day are of course, my Nike shoes for walking but that doesn't really count.  Payless American Eagle flats, Jessica Simpson Leve flats and Isaac Mizrahi for QVC get the green light for comfort.  Surprisingly, my Tory Burch flats fall into the two hour shoe category, GASP!  I have a few pairs and for the money they should yield better results.  In all fairness, it may just be my feet.  The other annoying thing about shoes is that, for my size, 5.5 used to be the smallest.  Somewhere in the late 90's or early 2000's, along came size 5 as the smallest.  There are even some companies that have 6 as the smallest size which are too big for me.  So as far as accessories go, I would choose costume jewelry or even belts over shoes any day.
This outfit looks better if the cardigan is unbuttoned, as in the first picture.  The second look shows the cardigan buttoned and the sleeves pushed up.  I chose not to wear a necklace because I thought the foxes were the showpiece.

Navy Blue and a Seahorse

Having a good hairdresser is like having a good dance partner and I now have lost mine.  She had a baby over the summer and then closed her business a few months later.  We were together for about nine years and as time went on, she learned how to deal with my thick mop of hair.  Despite my hair today, I was able to put together a cute outfit and the necklace was a welcome addition from JCPenney.  I don't know if there are any left over in the stores but this was a nice costume piece that I picked up online in September for $17.

Shirt: Old Ann Taylor
Skirt: Motto for QVC.
Shoes: Payless American Eagle Avery  Bow Flat

Saving Your Best for What Special Day?

The Target Merona cardigans are very similar to the J.Crew Jackie cardigans, so I have added some of these to my collection.  I find myself reaching for the Merona cardigans instead of the J.Crew ones when I'm having the mom on the go days, which are most days.  Because they are so inexpensive, I don't worry about snagging or spilling on them.  So here is the ridiculous part.  I have a Lane cedar chest filled with a collection of colorful J.Crew Jackie sweaters neatly folded.  I have collected them every time J.Crew has one of their great sales, but it really is wasteful if they never see the light of day.  I do get points for wearing the teacup shirt because normally I would feel the need to protect my precious Anthropologie item.  The last picture is an example of stress free dressing.  Target + Kmart = Does not matter if kitty snags or if clothes wear out.  The shoes are from Anthropologie but they have been well worn out of desperation for their green color.  It's hard to find green flats!

Target's Big Red Ball of Art

The gold sequins on this striped shirt had me pulling it off the clearance rack two seasons ago.  I love little touches like this added to everyday basic clothing, something that Anthropologie and J.Crew are known for.  And then along comes Target like a little fish trying to keep up with the bigger and cooler sea creature.  If you want some good J.Crew knockoffs, Target will keep you shopping.  This shirt is an example of that and I paid about $11 for it.

A Pink Lilly Poodle Kind of Day

The forecast said it would be hot today, but I still played it safe with a cardigan when I went to volunteer at my daughter's school today.  I oozed pink, maybe even too much, but today's weather called for a little more fun with fashion.  Although, there was a bit of fashion drama amongst the second graders which included the loss of a ring.  At lunch recess, my daughter and her friends rushed up to me frantic to inform me that one of the girls had lost her ring.  The information I received was that it was a pink and "real."  When they led me to the garbage can filled with lunch discards, I grimaced, then asked the distraught friend if she remembered where she bought it and that maybe it could be replaced.  In a very serious voice she informed me that it could not be replaced.  "I got it at Roundtable Pizza and it's a real ring!"  Even in second grade, fashion is taken very seriously.

The Vampire Wore Anthropologie

It obviously hasn't occurred to my eye doctor that showing a video on a continuous loop about eye problems in the waiting room is probably not a good idea for those of us patients who fall into the hypochondria category.  But aside from the strange informational video, this was a fairly easy checkup.
How fitting that as we near Halloween I get to look like a Cullen from the Twilight series.  In my first photo I'm struggling to keep my eyes open in the sunlight since I had my pupils dilated during the eye checkup.  The only reason I threw in the other vampire looking picture is to show that the cardigan looks better unbuttoned.  Another cute option would be to belt the cardigan but I find myself futzing with the belt when I have done this in the past.

Fighting the Blues in Blue Flowers

As much as I love October, I need to stay upbeat as the days grow shorter and we spiral towards winter.    Even though the weather has been great during the day, mornings are still dark and cold so I have my bag of tricks for fighting the blues.  One is taking walks and if there are hills the better.  Climbing up hills is not only great exercise but I also feel like I am fighting the uphill battle as I push through it.  And earlier this year I thought that it would be fun to buy the theme song from Rocky for a little mood enhancer.  You can't go wrong with this $1 song.

Bug Necklace for October 1

October is my favorite month so I thought this bug necklace would help usher in Halloween.  We had another warm day so this bug shirt paired well with the fifties style skirt.  This skirt reminds me of something you would find at Modcloth for its vintage look and I think I got it as far back as 2004. I prefer the first picture, however I posted the second one to showcase the fullness of the skirt.
