Moth Control

The Merona skirt from Target that I am wearing could be about ten years old. This was one of the goodies I found hidden in my closet recently.  It's a draped rayon that looks like a sarong but has an elastic waist instead of ties like a true sarong.  It was originally an impulse buy, but I love it now.
Every time I mention that I have found a long lost item in my closet, it makes it sound like I have one of those huge dream closets that make me melt when they show up on reality shows.
The reality is that I don't  have walk in closets, but just strict moth/silver fish control.  Over the years I have purchased plastic garment bags from Kmart and Target and gradually transported a lot of  clothing into them.
Some of the garment bags are hard to see through and therefore it's easy to forget what I have.
I want to note that the closet experts always suggest cloth garment bags, but I added the plastic bags because it was convenient to grab and go whenever I remembered how destructive moths and silver fish can be.  I also have crushed dried lavender from my garden in my closet as well since I have heard that lavender is a moth repellent.
Cats can be destructive as I have mentioned in past blogs.  No damage was done to my Kohls Peter Som skirt and I did know better than to drape it over a chair for a while before putting it away.  The cord belt was the allure for the kitty, as I came upon the skirt on the ground with the belt pulled in a straight line.

Handbag: Vintage Theodor of California.
Skirt: Target Merona, old.
Shirt: Ann Taylor outlet from summer 2013.
Shoes: Target Ona flats.

  1. I had no idea that silverfish can eat clothing. Crap. That is sick. I hate the things normally but now I hate them even more.

    Love the green bag.

    1. Thank you for the compliment on the handbag. I love vintage Theodor handbags because of the different shapes and colors they come in.
I have heard that Silverfish can even eat books and that surprised me.
They sound worse than Moth larvae.
      Have a great afternoon,

  2. I also didn't know about silverfish. Yuck.

    1. I may sound funny saying this, but they don't look that gross to me since they are a silver colored bug and when I have caught them, they shed off a pretty silver powder. But they freak me out because of the damage they can do and they are hard to catch with a tissue because they run fast.
      Have a great day,

  3. I didn't know what silver fish were either. I googled it. Now I wish I hadn't. Super icky. If I saw one in my closet, I'd be like, "Take the cardigan! It's yours!"

I need to do some serious reorganization in my closet. Because we've moved twice in two years, our closet situation has changed repeatedly. We have decent closet space right now, but I need to figure out how to maximize it. I think I need to take a trip to the Container Store and get some rolling drawers or something to put in my closet. Right now I have stuff in plastic storage tubs. But like you said, it's easy to forget what's in there.

    1. I forget to mention the storage tubs. I have my nicer Anthropologie cotton shirts and other items in the Rubber Maid totes. They seem sturdy and I have yet to find evidence of bugs among my clothes and holiday decorations.
I think organizing closets can be fun and since you mentioned that you have good closet space now, it should be a nice project. I would start with one thing at a time, like just skirts and then move on to dresses, etc.
      Have fun organizing,

  4. It's so funny reading everyone's reactions to bugs. I panic if I see a spider. I am not so freaked out by silverfish because they are called silverfish and not roaches. I grew up in Florida with giant flying roaches that are more like small animals so when I cam to Los Angeles and encountered silverfish I was okay with them. I didn't know they ate clothes though. Yikes. I may have to freak out now when I see them. LOL
I think it is so fun that you have saved your clothing and are now rediscovering them. You have some seriously amazing skirts!! And that green purse is so lovely!

    1. Thank you for the nice compliments!
I can't imagine seeing a flying Roach. I am afraid of Roaches and Flys because they are dirty insects. If a Fly flies in the house, I duck and try to dodge these bugs that always seem to fly towards me. Maybe Silverfish don't look so bad because they dine on clothing.
      Have a nice evening,

  5. I had no idea silver fish could damage clothes. You are smart to be one step ahead of the creatures. I love the Target skirt on you. And you caught those skirt bandits just in time! My dog will do that, too. But then he will decide that I must have left him a new chew toy. I know better than to leave things on the floor now, but he has chewed holes in two of my son's jeans since school started. Gotta love our pets! : )

    1. Wow, your dog is quite a chewer. I'm amazed that he has chewed through jeans. I'm usually good about putting things away but there are always those times when you think a few hours won't be a problem. Of course you never know when the pets will strike.

    1. Thank you Jessica. It is a fun print and it was a nice discovery in my closet. Now it's time to do some more organizing since cold weather is coming.
      Thanks for stopping by,
